Papers of Richard Cave [manuscript], 1810-1864.

Includes ledger, 1810-1815, of Richard Cave consisting of accounts pertaining to Montebello, Orange County, Va., birth and death dates of members of the Cave family, and slave birth and death records; and friendship book, 1831-1834, kept by Elizabeth Branch Cave as a guest at Rockbridge Alum Springs. Also includes diary, 1864, kept by John Philip Thompson while a prisoner on Johnson's Island. Topics include his daily activities, escape of prisoners, card and board games, exchange of sick prisoners, jewelry making, having a portrait done by a fellow prisoner, war news, church services, playing baseball, unrest over curtailment of correspondence and rations, and abuse by fellow prisoners of a Confederate prisoner who wanted to plead loyalty to Union. Also includes log book, 1848-1850, for the ship Tarolinta, kept by William Porter Cave for voyages to and from Valparaiso, Chile, New York, San Francisco, and Shanghai, carrying cargoes of copper, hides, wood, and flour.
